On June 5, 2022, Sweden is hosting the World Environment Day, an anniversary that calls everyone to commitment and change. Since 1974, the year in which it was established by the UN General Assembly, the event has been hosted by ever-changing countries and has grown to involve millions of people from all over the world engaged in initiatives in favor of the planet.
The slogan “Only One Earth” focuses on the need to move to more sustainable lifestyles to safeguard the only “home” we have.
50 years of global environmental action
This year marks an important anniversary because the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment was held in Stockholm in 1972: this is the first international meeting dedicated to environmental issues.
On this occasion the Declaration on the human environment was adopted, which defined the 26 principles on human rights and responsibilities in relation to the environment and which reports the following words: “remember that it is people who promote social progress, develop science and technology and through their hard work they continuously transform the human environment. We are both creatures and molders of our environment ”.
During the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, the idea of a World Environment Day (also known with the acronym WED) was made official, which was celebrated starting from 5 June 1974.
Sweden, focus of initiatives to safeguard our common home
The host country for World Environment Day 2022 is Sweden, and the Stockholm+50 international meeting will take place in Stockholm, around which numerous initiatives will take place, both online and face-to-face.
