World Water Day, celebrated on March 22nd each year since 1993, is an annual initiative established by the United Nations to draw attention to the urgency of taking concrete actions to protect this precious resource.
Safeguarding glaciers: focus of the 2025 edition
World Water Day, an occasion to promote actions aimed at combating the global water crisis, is celebrated every year under a different motto, proposed by the United Nations coordination mechanism UN-Water.
In 2025, the focus is on the conservation of glaciers. Climate change is accelerating the melting of glaciers, making the water cycle increasingly unpredictable and putting communities, ecosystems, and essential resources for life at risk.
By 2050, global water demand is expected to increase by 55%, causing growing pressure on glaciers and water reserves, already ihreatened by climate change and increasing industrial use.
Sustainable management of water is crucial to addressing the consequences of this phenomenon, including floods droughts, and rising sea levels.
